Experimenting with Materials that Sink or Float
Senior Infants experimented during Science week with different materials and whether they would sink or float when immersed in water. Before we began the children had to guess which materials they thought would float and which would sink. We tested balloons, coins, newspaper, rulers, and many other items.
We then tested whether the shape of an object effected the outcome. We put a ball of plasticine into the tub of water and it sank. We then shaped the plasticine into the shape of a boat and it floated! Our findings were very interesting and the children recorded them on their Science Report sheets.
